Mk4 1.4 8v acceleration problems

i know nothing about engines whatsoever so this could be something small, its worth checking though

basically what happens is when i accelerate in any gear i feel like the car reaches a point and then suddenly stops accelerating, it just feel like theres no response from the throttle past a certain point, any ideas?

What revs? - pretty asmatic engines the 8V's basically by 4000 rpm it's all over and done with!!!
