Why the change from rear discs to drums

My 2002 1.4tdipd Polo has disc brakes on the rear wheels why are VW fitting brake drums on the rear wheels on the latest Polos.

It's cheaper I guess ...

Too bad there wasn't an option to upgrade them to discs (besides buying the 1.9).

...there's a hidden benefit to drums you know.....cleaner wheels!! I'm loving that it's only the front wheels that need real hard work to clean! ....put drums all round I say!
