Could be your fuel filter maybe?! could be a number of things. I had a cutting out problem, n changing the fuel filter helped!.

Yeah i dont think my had been changed since new. What have you got to lose, you can only benefit from changing a few parts. Might be worth taking your sparkplugs out aswell n give them a inspection.

Mine does the same, it starts for a second and then cuts out. I find that if I give it more gas when turning the key (and keep the pedal down a bit when it's started) it will keep going.

It's not a big problem for me - once it's going it runs like normal. It happens rarely, and it does seem to be random.

I don't think it's spark plugs or HT leads, as they haven't made any difference to mine. Redex doesn't make any difference either.

You might be on to something with the fuel filter theory, I don't know when mine was last (if ever) changed.

polo boi: to get a decent set of HT leads you'll probably be paying 20 quid upwards for a set. You can get some really cheap ones (a couple of quid per lead) but the difference in design is quite  ! the original supplier (OE) is a company called Beru, you can get a set from http://www.vwspares.co.uk/p4electrical.php . I've got Champion leads and plugs which have caused no problems so far.

to be honest, i think that if you've got a spark, you've got a spark!

unless you've got a misfire (if you get one, you'll know about it) or incomplete combustion (i.e. petrol dripping from your exhaust), i don't think you'll improve the performance.

but colour coded HT leads will look priddier :)

cool, good luck with the bodywork. i'd love to be able to spray properly myself, but for the while i'll be leaving it to the pros!
