gearbox rod or cable

does anybody know what gearbox was in the pre 98 mk4 a 1.4cl polo was it rod or cable. and can i change a rod gearbox to a cable if i change the box and selector rod?

Its definately rod change. As for converting i dont know, sounds like alot of hassle
