Is it worth buying the 6N2 Polo GTI?

Post by chunkychimpanzee »

Hi people,

Just need your advice! I am currently looking for a Polo GTI 6N2 with the leather interior. I think they are awesome, the best one to have. Anyway I have read quite a few articles and topics which are saying that the Polo GTI gear box is the common fault for it! In which case, should I carry on to look for a 6N2 Polo GTI, or shall I wait for another year to save a bit more money then go for the New shape Polo GTI or maybe a second hand MK5 Golf GTI? I know every car have their problem, but I really want to be sure that which one should I go for. Personally, I think the 6N2 Polo GTI looks better than the new shape, but I also love the New shape Polo GTI, it looks like a baby version of MK5 Golf GTI. Anyway, looking forward to your advices!

Best regards, S.

Well there's a lot of us on here that haven't had any problems with the gearbox, it's luck of the draw really, just find one that's been looked after 8)

The 6N2 GTi is the best looking VW Polo which I have seen, and it is very well equipped for such a small car, the brand new Polo Gti on the other hand is quite ugly and is poorly equipped in comparison, ‘I should know as I have driven the car for a weekend’. If I were you I would go for a 6N2 GTi but I would take it for a proper test drive before parting with my cash, and I would pay special attention to the gearbox.

Good plan in asking us before you went ahead and bought one, as modified madness said up there, there are a lot of us who have no problems with gearboxes at all, me included.

Take your time, search around, give them a good test drive and come to your verdict after having a good think

Absolutely - you've got to go for it. I've had no problems at all until yesterday when the gearbox went - it is just the luckof the draw. But I've had two great years with it so far and there's nothing that comes close for the money.Fingers crossed I've another two years ahead of me.

Bizarre advice from sammyboy there. He got his gbox fixed free of charge and still got rid!

The only reason that I decided to sell my car was because, once something as major as a gearbox breaks, the car will never be the same again, and the gearbox would probably 'fail' again at some point.
I also lost confidence in the vehicle.

Thank you for your advices. I am really appreciate it. Many thanks. I have not test drove any Polo GTI before, so is there any tips that you can offer me that I need to be aware of when I test drive one in the future? I mean the 6N2 Polo GTI. Looking forward to your advices again. Cheers.

Kind regards, S.

well obviously be looking out for the usuals, enough tread on the tyres, oil cap, listen for any abnormal noises i guess whilst driving!

I fell in love with the GTi as soon as i test drove the first one, happened to work out good! Check all the paperwork, you might want to check about the pedal box, if its been recalled at any point by VW (should be a sticker in the log book towards the back i think)

i may have missed something so others will fill you in :)

Couple of things to look out for while I think about it.

The car is loaded with toys, climate, xenon's and cd auto changer - so you may as well give them all a good check while you have the opportunity.

The alloys are known for corrosion so it's not a disaster if they look a bit knackered - but it may help you when bargaining a price! Just so you know, vw will charge you about £400 or so per wheel for a replacement so they are not cheap - and you are looking at anything between £50-£80 for a refurb - again per wheel.

The only biggie is the gearbox but i'm not sure if there are any tell-tale signs - there certainly weren't with mine so that's where your luck come in I guess.

Good luck on finding one mate - you'll really enjoy it!

Apologies if some of these have been mentioned before.

hi, i bought my polo gti about a month ago, and have been loving every minute of driving it since. Some of these may sound obvious, but i'd rather say them than you forget to ask/check for it.

- Check for full service history - preferably vw - its definately worth ringing the place it was last serviced at to verify everything that has been done.

-Check that the pedal box recall has been done (there should be a stamp in the back of the manual, and possibly a sticker in the boot, under the carpet.

-As someone already mentioned - the BBS wheels do corrode, i used that as a great way to knock the price down on mine.

Apart from that good luck, and have fun on the test drive 8)

When i bought my GTi, the owner had fully re-furbed all the alloys which i was majorly chuffed about!...but managed to knock her down on the price with a few tiny scratches on the paintwork, and the interior door grabs with the plastic peeling.

Whilst on the topic of the door grabs near the handles, don't be too alarmed if they're peeling off, its because of the plastic thats coated on, its not brilliant!
