Cambelt

Hi,
Have been atempting to change cambelt, but when trying to remove centre consul found it impossible without removing engine is this right, or am I missing something?

to change the cam belt on the gti, u have to take of the engine mount on the cam belt side, u then must also support the engine. it is the same on some of the golf gti's. unless u kno how to time up the cams and pistons as well its not the best idea to change the belt urself!

I think I know how to fix the timing, I have also removed engine mounting, but I still cannot remove consul, its about 4" wide, and about 1" between it and the body.
