inside my boot first aid compartment there is a large battery of some sort that makes a load buzzing noise when i try to lock my doors (central looking) it goes off about about 20 sec but it is quite loud - any ideas what it is?

Not 100% on this, but if it has two small tubes coming out the top it could be the central locking pump. Check the seals on your lights on the driver side, water often leaks in from there and can damage the c/l pump. If there is any water int he compartment then disconnect the wires and remove the pump and put it in the airing cupboard for a day or so to remove any water. It should be fine after this. You will also have to look at getting a new seal or look at plugging any small gas in the current seals.

if your door pin isnt closing then its air lead may have disconnected. Have a closer look at the pump and check all the tubes are fixed on nice and tight. The loud noise you can hear can either be air escaping or a fault with the pump. They are suseptible to water damage. You could try and dry it out but if the internals have gone then that method wont work. You can get a second hand one easy enough from most scrappy's -thats what i did. Easy enough to remove and replace as well.

This is definately the pump making the excess noise I would have thought. If the system is not leak-free, the pump will continue for between 20 and 30 secconds until cutting off automatically to save the battery-life. Perhaps an o-ring seal is dodgy somewhere, this happended to us after replacing a boot lid and had the same effect (ie the pump running long after the lock was turned).

Hey, I have had this problem before. In my case this was not a faulty pump. It was caused due to the air pipe that goes into the passenger door coming loose. This causes the pump to keep going trying to lock the door until it reaches its timeout stage where it gives up (roughly half a minute).
When you open the door there is a connector between the shell of the car and the door with a black tube coming out of it that has all of the electric window wires etc inside that goes into the door.
On mine all I had to do was un-twist this connector and twist it back on to create a proper seal again. (you will need a large set of adjustable grip pliers to twist this off)
This may not be the case with yours, but it fixed mine. This is only likely to fix it if you can hear what sounds like an air leak near the passenger door when you activate the central locking.
