Timing Probs

OK, the trusty Mk1 runs perfectly when I set the timing on her, however after a few hundred miles the ignition retards, causing the associated misfiring and heavy fuel consumption.

My guess is the shaft is worn on the distributor...it is the original, 25 year old dizzy! However the dizzy is obsolete with both VW and Bosch...anyone know if I can get the original rebuilt?
