polo cambelt snapped

im looking at a 95k miles p reg damaged repairable polo for a cheap runaround. the cambelt snapped and the head is damaged. the guy said the bottom end would be ok as he said he contacted vw and they said the pistons ect would be untouched.

id be looking for a used cly/head and doing the job myself.

the car is £395ono. is it worth it?

if you can do the work and get the parts for sensible money then id say go for it.

Like rich said, depends how much it's going to cost you to sort it! And it's basically down to 2 things:
-How much you want to do yourself
-How many parts are needed

You shouldn't need to take the engine out, so this is a big + in the DIY stakes. Basically you'll need to drain all the fluid out of the engine (if it hasn't already been done) and remove the head.

By 'damage to the head' does he mean the metal casting is damaged or the internals (i.e. valve train) is damaged? Either way you need to inspect the camshaft, valves and stem seals. You'll probably find the valves are bent.

Good 16v's go from 1700 to 3000 ish - what else needs doing to the car? E.g bodywork, brakes etc.

At least this way, you know what condition the engine's in as most of it will be rebuilt.

I'd be tempted! If worst comes to worst, you could probably break the rest of the car for more than 395.

I need a winter car because my own car is rwd and usless in bad weather and the missus is near passing her test. She aint getting near mine.

I'd probably source a used cyl head from a breakers yard but im just worried that the pistons are ok and arent shocked or anything.

I dont think its a 16valver.

I wouldn't think the pistons / bottom end would be damaged.
