petrol needle going crazy

i top my petrol to 10 pounds , i get the needle at the half way point, or just less. and i drive around 20 miles and the needle goes near the red point. but if i turn the car off and start it again, the needle goes back up to its original place where its supposed to be. its a bit wierd,? hat can b da problem?
