CAM BELT - what mileage?

Post by nafeGTI »

My car's got about 50K on it, at what mileage did you all get your cambelts done? whats the lowest mileage you've heard of a cambelt going on a 6N2?

i guess the sooner the better and all that!

had mine done at 33k to be on the save side. VW are now recommending every 40k and not 60k

had mine done when I bought it at 24k, but that was recommended as it was 5 years old & hadn't been done yet.

due to the fact its dodgy on this model I got mine changed at 49k a week after I bought it, VW have changed the mileage for the recommended change from 60k to 40k so you won't be able to kick up a fuss if it does go. Get it changed..300 quid is alot better than 2grand. I couldnt enjoy the experience till it was done, was always worried about it going. The engine management light came on before i took it in and i got so scared my friend towed it to the VW garage(it turned out to be a dirty sensor  )...photos below haha

My service is in March or at 37k miles and the car is almost at 35k miles. Should I get it done?

I reckon it depends how long you have had it and how much stick you have given it. I had no idea what my car had been through for the last 49k so wasn't worth the risk, one of the previous owners was a lady driver for starters :P

Mine was an ex demo then owned by a lady for the first 5 years who used it to drive back and forth to her work, covering 5k a year. I don't rag mine too often. Depends on how much cash I have...my insurance and MOT are also due in March

If you have the cash spare I would say do it Mouse.

I think VW recommend it being done every 4 years regardless of mileage.

Aarrgh....Im getting worried after reading this thread. My GTI's 5 years old now and has just reached 40k. My next service is due in 1500 miles, might have to get it done then.
Whats a ball park figure price for it?

EDIT
Is a cambelt the same thing as a 'toothed belt'? As I was just looking through the cars Service History/Schedule and couldn't see Cambelt listed there.

it cost me £303 as far as I remember for the cambelt/toothbelt change about 2 months ago from main stealer, that includes labour & waterpump change..
