6n 1.6 glx extreme power loss (possibly electrical)

Post by MattPo-Low »

posted this also in power train but there doesnt seem to be much activity there so thought i'd try here

i have a 1996 polo 6n 1.6 glx which has recently lost all power. The car will run fine on start up for roughly 30 seconds to a minute and then loses all power, still revs all the way but very very slowly and its really struggling, the strange thing is if i reset the ignition(key off then back on) whilst in motion the problem rectifies itself for roughly another 30 seconds then returns to running badly, the same goes for if i stop an turn the car off and then restart it. I've had a friend hook it up to a computer which gave a coil pack error i have changed the coil and the problem remains. I have also changed the fuel filter and checked the various fuel/ vacuum hoses although i cant see it being a mechanical error due to the fact that if i reset the ignition its fine for a small time. i have all checked and made sure all the cylinders are firing so i presume theres no problem there.

Any suggestions appreciated

Cheers
Matt

get it on vag com check and record faults clear them run it then check faults again.
then rectify anything that is still showing.
otherwise it's a mechanic job

I'll be changing my dizzy cap, rotor arm, HT leads and spark plugs tomorrow, as well as running diagnostics, cleaning the throttle body and aligning the throttle body. If that doesnt work the only things I can thing of would be the fuel filter or fuel pump... :)

Well, I cleaned the throttle body and changed the fuel filter today, still got the problem.

HT leads, plugs, rotor arm and dizzy cap to be changed on Monday, will clear the fault codes and align the throttle body on Tuesday.

If that doesn't fix things I'll be ordering a new coil and a new fuel pump.
