Help wanted with Gearbox Selector Shaft Leaking

I wonder if anyone can help me,
My friends 1997 1400 8v has decided to develope an oil leak from the gearbox selector shaft seal.
Does anyone know how difficult this job is to do with the gearbox still in the car, and I've been told you need a special tool to do it, so does anyone know what sort of tool is needed?
