Engine cuts after 4-5 mins or running

Post by Tom Barrack »

Hi,
I have a VW polo 1999 (s-reg) that keeps cutting out after about 4 mins of running, its almost like the ignition is being switched off? I have checked the coil, HT and replaced the rotor arma and dissy cap. no joy. also cleaned the breather hoses and throttle body again still the same effect. A mate told me that there was a recall for dodgy fuel cut-off switches about 1999 -2000. anyone nknow if this is true??
any other suggestions would be appreciated, before the car stalls theres no noises, no warnign lights. no coughing of the engine, its just cuts.
any help??
many thanks

If it was cutting out due to lack of fueling I would expect a cough/splutter mis-fire etc. As it is just stopping I would carry on looking along the electrical front... check all your relays they may have a thermal fuse causing them to open/close resulting in the engine stopping... they would also re-set and have a reliable time delay... ie 4-5 mins

Suggest you check the error codes if there are any...
My local dealer charges a fiver to plug in and print me a diagnostic print.

 hope it helps...

sounds like your transponder in the key is messed up.

if thats the case, it need re-programming.

the car will run for a few minuites, then go dead.
