Polo Newbie

Post by septic »

Hi guys! I'm new to DUB scene and I have a Mk4 Polo 1.4 S-reg. I just want to start modifying my car and I only have £500 to start off wth my modifications. What should I start off with first? I've seen some of your rides and they look awesome! I appreciate your help and look forward to being part of the Mk4 crew :)

Here are some (crappy) pics of my car at the moment:

hello.

same colour as my 16v by the looks of it.

£500 ?

first thing first really. lower it and get some alloys on it.

how much you spend on either of those depends on what you want.

you can lower it about 60mm on cheaper end suspension kits like venom or gmax for @ £200.

Alloys are obviously a very subjective thing.
most people would recommend 14 or 15 inch. I'd go with that and i'd stick to vw alloys aswell. most 4 stud VW alloys will fit.
14" wheels need 185/55/14 tyres and 15" need 195/45/15 to keep the correct rolling radius.
you should be able to pick a second hand set of 14" with half decent tyres either on here or ebay for £100 - 150.
next on my list would be the lights. i/m not sure how much you'd pay for clear indicators or 16v rear lights tho.

oh yeah, de-badge the back end...it's free!

Mostly agree with Alan there.

Firstly is definitely lowering, you can get a coilover set from philj on clubpolo for really cheap. Less than £300 and loads have people have said they are good.

Personally, i would look At NOZ's le castelletes he has for sale on this forum.....they are great wheels and have recently been refurbed! Only £150!!!

That would leave you with a wee bit to think of stuff like debadged grille, clear lights etc 16v rear lights.

That will happily fill out your £500......

The 6N2 light conversion is a good, cost effective mod. There's is a set for sale on this forum, or you can buy them from VAG Parts.

Fitting instructions here:

If you like the idea, debadging is a small thing you could do and wouldn't at all break the £500 budget. Its normally personal preference though.

£500? I've done loads to my car (thats an old pick btw) and ive spent about £350 and its changed it so much! Basically the key is don't bother with tiny things that no one will notice, and use ebay. heres a basic summery of how ive transformed my car with so little (loads of other stuff not included here) :

Interior
Red & black seat covers £35 - transforms the inside
RAGE Seat belt harnesses - £6 - really simple but looks awesome
Red footwell neons - £6 dead cheap and looks so cool at night
Red & black floor mats - £10 look so much better than crap grey rubber ones
Silver door lock pins - £0! just unscrewed them and sprayed them silver
Racing pedals - £10 - just screw on but make your car look well swish

Audio
Sony Xlod head unit - £65 - awesome sound quality, looks awesome
Kenwood rear speakers - £20 (second hand) adds rear sound, and is awesome

Exterior
Bee sting aerial - £10 - makes the car look more sporty
Clear front indicators - £25 - makes the front look ALOT better
Debadged grille - £25 - makes the car look well sporty
De badged rear - £0! just scrape off the letters with a credit card and white spirit, and go over it with some T-cut, looks really good.
Blue xenon side lights - £5 - look so good at night!

If you want any more info or where i got this stuff just drop me a note. Don't listen to any1 who says ebay is all crap lol. Good luck with the moddin!

firs thign id say is lower, like everyone esle says! Mainly as it is the single easiest thing to do to make your car look and handle alot better.

My polo is only down 40mm but on 15's thats all you really need to have it look good and be practical (lots of bumps round my err... enz? lol) The springs cost me 40 quid i think from German, swedish and french. If your not aquainted with GSF go to your local one and pick up a catalogue now lol.

Like the dude above says ebay is kool. Though im personally not a fan off blue sidelights, the covers and neons dont look to shabby imo. But hey to each his own right.

Listen to the guys when it comes to alloys though they definately know theyre s**t. Depending on what look you want for your car will dictate what alloys you get, dont know what type of colours would suit a car of yours' colour. Use photoshop to see how things could look is what i say. Matter of fact im bored i might even give it a quick play...

Ah man, I really appreciate all the help and advice I'm getting, I really appreciate the effort :P Yea I'm definately going for the lowering option first, but obviously I'm going to need further guidance on how much to lower it by and to find a decent garage that can do it. I might go for 14" BBS rims but I have yet to check the VW ones. Thanks for the list JoeG07! It really helped my a lot! I've got the exact same Sony Xplod head unit as you :) I also have the blue Xenon side lights at home. I also have (and I'm gonna get slapped up for saying this) blue neon under-lights but I'm reluctant to add them now :P I really like what you've done with your car!

Alan should I go for 40mm or 60mm lowering?

Thanks for all the help. The cr4p thing is, I have to wait till the 2nd of June before I can go crazy with the modding cause of my final year Law exams. But I'm making a blueprint of my ideas now so I know where to buy the rims and shizzle you guys are recommending.

Again, thanks for all the help and advice :D Keep em coming hehe!

ALso, I have a gear knob at home but I can't take out the standard one in my car, its really hard to unscrew.

It dont unscrew mate. Take the gear stick gator off the stick and at the base of gear knob there is a ring crimped around the bottom of the gear knob. Either prise it open with a screw driver or cut it off its upto you. But once thats done you can just slide it off.

it's really up to you mate.

just bear in mind the condition of the roads and amount of speed bumps you have to tackle on a regular basis.

I'm lowering my 16v 40mm but only cos where i live i have to go over speed bumps no matter what and the roads in Sheffield make Iraq's look as smooth as a snooker table.

    60mm looks better.
