Advice please

Post by emuni »

Hi all, this is my first post and all you guys seem pretty knowledgeable. i would like some advice on buying a polo. i was looking at one today which was a 1999 1.4 8v 3 door, done 52k got fsh (cambelt done at 40-something) and had electric mirrors and windows, air con, power steering, alarm with remote central locking etc. it was mechanically fine but had a mark on the bonnet from a bit of touch up paint gone wrong. it is dark red (canyon red i think). The bad points are, the passenger side electric window does not work, the two speakers in the doors didn't seem to work, and the two in the top of the dash did, but they had some dodgy clarion head unit. They were asking £1500 and i offered £1100, they're gonna get back to me later and let me know. what do you guys reckon its worth??

Thanks in advance :D

hi

the electrical faults you mentioned are usually quite easy to fix - loose connections, bad switches etc. but a good point to knock the price down a bit.

the upside is it's low mileage, it's one of the last mk4's and aircon is quite uncommon.

i would say it's worth somewhere between 1100 and 1500 - but i'm not quite sure where :?

GBP 1100 sounds about right... If he gets back to you, don't offer him more than that, as you said there are quite a lot of faults to the car. Good luck with your purchase. :)

Thanks guys, what do you think could be causing the window not to work? There didn't seem to be any clicking or noises coming from the window when i hit the button, but i noticed the interior light dimmed when i hit the switch. Also, the front speakers were reversed (left channel was coming out of right speaker and vice-versa) am i right in thinking this could be just wired incorrectly into the back of the head unit?

I just had a look on auto trader, the polo's with aircon seem to be selling for a lot more than those without.. i like the colour too.. so you think i shouldn't go higher than £1100?

I think you can go a bit higher than 1100, looking at some of the ones I've seen for sale on here.

a 1999 model too. I'd say if it was mint it'd be over 1500. who knows, if you like it then offer 1250. they shouldn't refuse that.

electric window might just need a damn good thump on the interior door handle. always worked for me.

check the aircon works and is cooooold

lol, i'll give it a knock and see how it goes. Yeah the aircon is cooooooold :D

Okay i'll offer £1250 if he refuses the £1100.. thanks again!

Oh yeah, does the aircon last or is it another thing to fall apart?

Leccy windows are the only thing to go on polos really far as im aware. i know mines gone lol.

1100 for that seems a damn decent price. My little sisters just paid that for a 1.0 litre L model. No leccy windows, no powersteering no mod cons whatsoever. Sept its a sexy polo lol. We only paid that much cos it 35k on the clock and runs pretty smooth (though i think it sounds lumpy but they wont listen to me  )

So if we got that for 1100 and you can get yours for close to that then id say hell yes go for the buy. Dont think youll regret it, there damn good cars.

aircon will often need re-gassing, that's about it really. just wanted you to check the gas was ok (which it is).

if you like it, buy it, don't wait around "just in case", you'll end up regretting it

Where is a good place to buy stuff? (clear indicators, etc)
Or is ebay the best bet?

Thanks!

sounds like a fair deal to me.

try www.awesome-gti.co.uk for the bits and bobs you want! thing with ebay is you don't always know the quality of the parts you're buying.
