1.0L - cam near dead, help?

Post by LeMeph »

my lil sister has just passed her test last week and her camshaft has only gone and died! well near enough. Loud tapping noise and upon inspection by our mechanic he says the egg shaped thingers have basically worn away. he doesnt know why though.

So firstly how could this have happened?

Secondly how much for a new one and where to look?

Is there such thing as a performance cam for a 1.0L lol. Cos might get one if there is.

i'd guess oil starvation at the top of the engine.

no oil=no lubrication=grinding metal.

you may aswell try and get one from a scrappy if you can get it off ass it's easyenough to see if its worn or not.

no point putting a performance cam in a standard 1.0 even if you can get one.

yeh guessed that thought it might be fun tho lol.

Well we have been quoted 300 squid from vag

Not going there any time soon.

Stevens VW dismantlers out chelmsford way quoted 120 for an entire head. they dont do just the cam like so thats looking the most promising option.

My mechanic in south london says he has cams for a 1.3 and 1.4 for definate and isnt sure if he has any 1.O's. He wants to look too see if maybe they are the same?

Dont suppose anybody knows if they are?

Do you think its worth looking into the oil pump (or whatever is in there) aswell then? As if what you say is true then surely something must be up with the way the oil circulates around the engine.

Hey dude. well to update on the whole thing i wont be needing that head!

My mechanic ahs for some reason suggested changing the whole engine as he doesnt know whats caused the cam to go in the first place. oil is reaching the top and everything so as an extra precaution hes doing a whole swap

80 quid for a new engine from steves volkswagen dismantlers with a discount for knowing the guy and a few woodchips lol.

So the new engine is going in sometime this week.

Thanks for the offer though dude!
