Need some valuable advance from you guys!! My 16v has reached 52,000 miles on the clock, and I have noticed that there are some leaking from the gap in between the Rocker head cover and the engine.
Is this means its about time for me to replace the head gasket to avoid anymore leaking? If so, is it a difficult job or easy to remove the rocker head cover?? What do I have to be aware? Would be great if I can carry out the work by myself...
Many thanks for your support and advise in advance!! Cheers guys!
you would know if the head gasket had gone ( as you would have milky oil or oily coolant. or worse no coolant.)
as for that gasket if its just seeping i wouldent bother with it.
it shouldent be a hard job to do just whip the cover off ( carefull not to round the bolts. old gasket off ( make sure theres no remains before you put the new one on. ) new one on and put the cover back on.
make sure you get no crap under teh cover as you will ruin the cams and lifters(i dunno the proper name for them) anyway you dont want to get grit under that cover.

I've been to the VW dealership today and do a price check on this rocker cover gasket (sorry for decribed it in a 'head gasket'). They said its only come with the rocker head cover, which means I have to buy the whole set; rocket head cover with the cover gasket. This will costs me £140 in total. This is very silly, I cannot believe they dont sell the cover gasket individually!! So I dont think I will bother to replace them now... cos the leak is not that serious anyway...
Go back and ask for the persons name that said that to you... and then ask to speak to a manager.
That is the biggest BULL sH it... i have ever heard. LOL.
You can buy a gaskett for roughly 10 to 15 pounds.. they are cheap. And you can buy them seperately. If you dont want to go to those robbing thieves at the vw place..... i would recomend going to GSF. They are the biznesss!!!
the rocker cover and gasket never used to come seperate on the 16v engine dont know if this has changed now tho.
i used timing case sealer that you get on the new 1.2 polos and mine has been fine kept the gasket on and sealed over the gasket, done this months ago and has not leaked since
did you read this thread or just post. look at the seccond post above yours. now click on the link and see what topic it links to. yep thats correct teh same one you did.
The rocker cover does indeed not have a gasket. My VW specialist pointed this out to me but just tightened it up for me saying this leak was a common 16v problem. He said that they can now seal it with special sealent.
I was previously stung by VW garage for a replacement cover which didn't solve the problem (they are not to be trusted).
I left it and it got worse so i've just had it sealed. Unfortunately the oil has run down the engine and whilst there is no leak anymore the engine stinks of burnt oil after I run it. I'd get the leak sealed before you get a similar smelly engine.
Really i need to get the engine bay steam cleaned but the likelyhood of some muppet swamping out my engine with damp is putting me off.
