Door lock help

Post by stub »

Guys i am new to this forum I have just brought a MK4 Polo (I think its a MK4 its a 1996?) I want to do some Mods so will be asking about what to do soon, I have one issue that I need to solve first, when I got it I didn’t notice that the passengers door lock has been forced and its obviously been used to break in from, I have tried car spares places and scrap yards but they have told me I need to go to the dealers to get it done, I just cant afford this, is there any other way to get it fixed and has anyone got any pics or how to guides on how to change it?

Here's a diagram of how it connects

So you can figure out what you need to change. You should be able to get everything from the scrapyard, except for the barrel, which i suppose only works with you key. Everything else is standard on the polo MK4 (which is the one you got)

If you need anything more specific, let me know

Yes,

I mean the lock cylinder. Because it has to be shaped to you key, right? Otherwise, any other key would work in there.

so, technically, if i put my lock cilinder in a new lock (i've broken one of mine, in particular pieces n° 8,9,11 and 12) it should be fine? maybe i'm going to try this..

go to a scrappy and buy a rear handle of a 5 door mk4.

then also its harder to break into again as there is no key hole.

i've done this and if my remote dies i'm f****d as i have no way to get in to car

slightly off topic but does anyone know anything about getting locks re-tumbled to match existing keys?

you can retumble locks as per the above post.

its a big faf to do it. you basicly insert the key in your exsiting lock to remove the cylinder from the door handle

basicly the lock has O shaped things inside it with a notch at a certain level this is what slots into the groove in the key. so to reley a old barel you need to remove the sleeve.

to remove the sleeve you need one of 2 things. the old key or your key and a lot of patience.

to do it without the original key you will need to put your key in just enough to turn the lock and then keep the pressure on and gently push in the widgets form the top with a flat screwdriver. till the key will rotate the lock round turn it around 90 degrees and push the lock out from the back careful not to loose the widgets.

then remove all of the O pice things from the barrel 4 on each side.

now what you need to work out is what order you need to put back in to make it work for your key.

so to work out that order you will need to slide them on your key and work out a rough idea where there going. now slot the first 2 in and check they work by inserting your key. ( you know you got it right as the widgets get level with the cylinder. ) then procede till all 8 are in.

now you need to reinsert the cylinder into the sleeve (number 7 on the diagram)
if it doesnt fit you havent got the widgets in the right order.

when you have the lock in the sleve with the key in it shoudl rotate 360 degrees with the key in. you need to rotate it untill its in the locked position ( thats with the widgets lined up to the slots in the sleeve you can now remove the key.)

the hardest part now is assebling the whole thing as you need to get the circlip (11 on the diagram) through the holes in part 12 ind into the groove in the end of part 2 while keeping the spring 10 compressed. all i can say is good luck this wil take around 30 mins and will hurt your fingers. unless you can find the VW lock assebly tool or get the lot in a vice without it flinging everywhere.
