Hey guys, i'm in a bit of a pickle.
After going to the Polo Show and seeig some very nice Mk4's, i'm toying with the idea of selling my GTi and buying a 1.4 16v!!! Then with the extra cash i'll have spare, i could do the essential mods such as coilovers, nice alloys, kamei grill and a few other little touches!!! Hopefully to make it a very tidy liitle motor.
Or do i keep my GTi which has had very few problems (touch wood) and be happy with what i already have?
Your opinions will hopefully help me make a decision!!!
Thanks.

I think its a lil crazy, but maybe a bit of fun if you have the time.
I think the mk4 is getting on a bit... but means you can pick up moddified parts for dead cheap... making it in my eyes the best car to have at the moment out of all the other versions. I think the only problem it has is the engines arent exactly great.. your not going to be going fast... but you will be looking good and saving money on insurance... which makes sense to you?

6n parts have come down in price (eBay etc.) over the past year slightly, but as said above, it's getting on a bit. I'm saving up for a 9n atm then splash out on remap, votex etc. I think it would be a regret to sell the Gti for a 6n in my opinion, i'd do anything for a GTi! well, one that doesn't have an exploding gearbox...

Cheers for the replies so far guys.
Just a few questions. Whats involved in getting a 16v upto around 110-120bhp and cost of of these upgrades? And also, do they have the same crappy likely to fail gearbox as the GTi?
I love my GTi loads and even if i got rid of it for an S3 (not likely any time soon) i'd still wish i'd kept the GTi.....it such an ace little car!!!
Think i just fancy a change, and modifying a slightly older Polo with out having to save up. Had the GTi 4 years now so its sort of time for a change me thinks. Will have to go and drive a Mk4 though and just see if its a nice drive.

Sorry i'm thinking of the 1.6 16v? +35hp will cost you a lot on a 1.4, just get a 1.6 16v (read the official mk4 FAQ at the top of this forum) then go from there if you want to match the performance of your gti, but bare in mind the engine would of lost power as the 1.6 came out in 1998, and 9 year old engines aren't what they used to be lol

Pretty sure the 1.6 mk4 was an 8 valve.
There is someone on clubpolo who has a mk4 valver that ran 118bhp on the rollers in january.
Im guessing you should make a shopping list, such as:
BMC
4-2-1 manifold
de-cat back system
lose some extra weight of the car
Then see how it feels, then look into headwork / cams
