had car in for MOT, passed, exhaust blows like anything though, but still it passed
asked the garage to check the rattling underneath (i suspected the cat guard)
They told me it was the cat itself, and that it has about 4 months left in it, and welding it would be constituted as being illegal
is this true?
The Catalytic converter, what i heard.............

Hm now i had a terrable rattle for months and the garages said twise it was the insides of the cat falling to bits! turns out it was my brake pads rattling up and down in the calliper which i foind after noticing it went when i hit the brakes.
If theres no hole in the cat and its just disintergrating, it can go on for months like that, it still does its job, its just the internals come loose.

what i did was a DIY decat. because it had broken up and blocked my exhaust.
toold i used were
17mm socket
6 inch extention bar
breaker bar
13m spanner.
fire paste exhaust sealant
so first off you need to crack the nuts on the downpipe
so soak the nuts in wd40 or equivalent you can get access from the top of the car.
then get under and look up towards where the o2 sensor is you will see 3 17mm bolts undo those.
now look behind the cat you will see a sleeve type thing undo the 13mm bolts on that. (you may need to drop the middle exhust hanger)
now the 2 parts should twist apart with abit of perseverance.
now you have the whole exhaust free.
now i made a support for the cat and had the part with the flex pipe uppermost and supported it at a slight angle.
so slowley i poured petrol in the top part of the pipe abit at a time till a little come from the bottom. i lit it and waited untill the cat got nice and hot. if you have a bicycle pump or something slowley blow air down the tube. being very carefull as this has a habit of backfireing and i singed my eyebrows doing this)
so you now have a very hot cat.
i got a friend to hold the exhaust with thick gloves (or you could put in a vice carfull not to crush the tube)
while i bashed the middle out with a broom handle. every so often you need to shake the stuff out the middle. when it stops rattling and the broom goes through the cat niceley then your all done.
