1.6 GLX Polo - Randomly cuts out and not start - help! :(

Hi, i think i have posted this to the correct location...

Ok, i have...

VW 1.6 GLX Polo (1996 - think)

Lovely little car, been in the family for about 5 years, all of a sudden a few months ago the car would just die while driving, electrics fine, the engine would just go off! Rarely the car would start first time, some times it took 20 to 40 mins before it would start - then all would be fine for a few more days. I think the car has lost power, but could be my imagination.

On suggestion i have replaced the Coil, was fine for 2 weeks then started again. Im so worried as my friend had the same car but older and she spent hundreds and could never fix it. The AA and mechanics have no idea what the prob is, but it has been suggested it could be the alarm that has been fitted to the car!?

Any help will be appreciated as I cannot afford to get a new car and cannot afford to have a car that keeps on dying on me, im at my wits end. I worried that the mechanics are just making things up for me to spend £££
