the difference between the mk4 (6n) and mk5 (6n2) is a bit of body work. the main bits are the rear bumper on the 6n is 2 pieces and on the 6n2 its one piece same as on the front bumper. the lights on the front of the 6n2 are slightly bigger in height to and the, wat i believe is the most obvious is on the 6n the VW badge on the front grill is not recessed into the bonnet on the 6n2 the bonney has a slight notch cut out of it for the badge to sit in. also on the 6n the the reg plate on the rear is on the boot and on the 6n2 its on the bumper. the 6n has a small VW badge just above the reg plate the 6n2 has a bigger VW badge on the middle of the boot just above the boot handle. and also the bump strips on the sides of the 6n are just glues on but the 6n2 theyre glued on but have holes behind the strips. i think thats pretty much it.

Yeah, other than the rubber roof strips are now colour coded plastic, new wing mirrors, new interior, different engines blah blah blah

there's a lot of info in the Mk4 FAQ, which would have told you that it was only made till 1999.
