Emissions problems

i have a polo 02 1.4 and ive had no end of problems with the emissions.

mainly the emissions light and engine management system light always coming on.

any ideas what is causing this and how it can be prevented?

You really need to get any generated fault codes read and cleared before anyone makes guesses, VAG-COM would be the obvious cheap way of doing this - do you know anyone near you with VAG-COM?
