Problems with P reg polo - Please help!

Hi all,

I started having trouble with my polo about 2 months ago when the cold weather first arrived. At first my car was running perfectly then when i tried to start it one night it wouldn't go. i got a friend to bump it for me and was then fine for a few days and had no problems. Then it happened again and started to become more frequent to the point where i knew i would have to bump it almost every morning. I took it to a local garage and they had a look only to tell me they didn't no what the problem was and could only recommend that i try replacing the fuel filter. This was about 10 days ago. When i got in my car yesterday to go and pick one up, the same thing happened, my car wouldn't start so i bumped it again. This time the car started as it does when bumping but the power steering had gone all together and the battery light stayed on continuously. As i was driving i noticed that every time i came to slow down or stop the engine would almost cut out so i took my car home. Now the car won't even turn over and will only start with a bump.

This might seem simple to you guys but i know nothing about cars and engines. Do you think the problem is the filter, the battery or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

sounds like a belt has gone if your power steering isn't working

as for the initial problem, I'm amazed the garage didn't tell you either a new battery or a new alternator?!
