Service Intervals on FSI

Hey Guys

Now i did use the search but it turned up 40 pages of threads which aint ideal lol.

Now the new FSI i bought has 18k miles on it and has no service stamp i presume because its still on it long life service.

I do around 15-20k miles a year and normally change my oil in my current mark 5 polo every 6-12 months

Now the garage im buying it from are servicing it for me despite it not needing one as the service indicator has not come up yet, now im worried they will use normal life oil. Will it do any damage?

Should i suggest they service it and just leave the existing oil in it?

I Also live in shropshire, is there any where local any one can recommend to get decent services other than VW?

This should be an easy decision as you are doing what should turn out to be "an average variable servicing year's" mileage in 12 months. Lots of people including me don't like variable servicing, but if you are getting VW to service it, then it work out cheaper if its left on variable servicing. Could be your VW supplying dealer checked how near its service it was - or has worked out that by its mileage that the next service is almost due. Also I would think that would be very poor form for the dealer to change to fixed mileage/time without you asking for it - so you should assume that they are using the correct oil (you could get someone to check if they have changed the oil quality bit in the configuration). As "have they used the right quality of oil" - you either trust them or the only way out of this is to change the oil again yourself for the expensive long service oil!

Hi, Welcome to the Forum

You don't say what Dealer you are buying the car from? If it is a VW Main Dealer then I would not be too worried about the stamp issue. My advice to you would be that you should check to see if the car has had any service at all? Remember the absence (or otherwise) of a 'stamp' does not necessarily imply service was/was no done (people sometimes forget to get the stamp etc.) - however as its done 18K I would say that it is now due [a service].

So, if you are buying from VW Main Dealer, let them service it and they will do a good job - you have to trust them, because further down if anything goes wrong you have full comeback on them.

If this is a Independent Dealer then its a tricky one. If you don't trust him to use the right oil etc. then why are you trusting him enough to buy from him? I mean the car is the second most expensive purchase so if you trust them to buy the car from, then I guess you should trust them Re: Servicing. if it were me (and speaking personally) I would negotiate a further reduction to reflect the car needing a service and either take it to VW or DIY using the right oil and filters.

Either way, it comes down to trust.

i do trust em im just been over cautious over my new car

and it comes with a 3 month warranty so if it did do anything i ahve come back, its not a little out fit although not a main deal.

They are mopping the car too so they had better do a good job

We'll see and ill ask anyway when i pick it up.

This is not quite so good then and it just shows how in practise the "block exemption" can work against us (our confidence). Very few small, but even good, car sales places will bother to invest in the correct kit to change or even correctly reset the service indicator. This seems to lead to the next service warning appearing at very very short intervals - days or weeks even. Some people think that just resetting the dash using the normal old method changes the service warnings to fixed mileage/days, but it seems that this does not end up making all the necessary changes in the engine ECU. This might be a problem for you and its just a nuisance that VAG use these "special" oils. If your selling garage was an independant VAG specialist that I would think that he would do this simple job correctly, but if he is not - then will he bother? Remember it sounds like this car still carries VW warranty and you might want to extend it - personally I'd stick to the VW dealers for service/repair through this period to minimise long term problems. (cover all bases) Might be better to buy without his service - at a reduction, then go to VW stealer for service.

Best plan for you is to phone a VW garage, give them your reg number and ask for a price for long and fixed services. Using your reg number they will work out which model of car it is exactly - so the price will be correct. Make sure you ask for the proper service not some short cheap winter one they are doing for any brand of car - then hammer you once you book the car in.
