Extended 'WARRANTY' from VW Dealer - is it worth it??

Hi,

Just received a letter from my local VW stealer, stating that my warranty runs out in 2 weeks!
Just wondered if anyone thought it would be worth renewing it for another year for Â£347??

(My GTi is on X plate, with 42k and full VW service history - no engine mods)

Has anyone done this? Was it worth it??

what does the warranty cover exactly?

Its the standard extended warranty with unlimited milage...it covers the following:

Consumables??!!
Internal engine components
Engine management system
Starter motor and solenoid
GEARBOX AND CLUTCH
Steering system
Braking system
Front and rear suspension

I'd say go for it as the gearbox is a ticking timebomb. Good to get an extended warranty on an older car

I wouldnt bother...

I dont trust waranties on older cars, they always find a way of wiggling out of doing the work...

Stick the money in the bank, then do the same next year....and then you should have enough to cover ALL eventualities...

40K is the start of the gearbox worries...provided your not driving like a cock, you should easily see 50...just keep an eye and ear out for it starting to get bad...

I'm with Tegwin, usually with warranties like these they only cover everything if the car is under 3 years old or under 60,000 miles which is why I didn't extend mine.

I needed a window motor and regulator which they didn't cover, I found this out about 2 weeks after getting it done and had to cough up over Â£300!

It's up to you at the end of the day though mate

i bought mt GTI back in novemeber from a main dealer and got a 12 month warranty with it. it only covers thw main components stated by JDism.

i guess its only worth getting if you think your gearbox may go in the next year.

i'm glad i have mine but wouldnt have paid Â£350 for it!

I'd say don't go for it.

I bought my car in 2005 from the dealers when it was comming up to 4 years old and had 1 year warrenty. The dealers tried to get out of every repair they should have covered for, and that warrenty is more comprehensive than the one you are being offered. If you do choose to go for it, just bear in mind that the dealers will try their best to get out of it.

I personally can't see them paying for a new gearbox if yours goes to be honest, not with the age of the car now.

As I have done my time in VW, this VW warranty isnt all that great. Its a limited component warranty which only covers you up to Â£800 per time including parts and labour - this doesnt include a new gearbox as its Â£950 for an exchange box from VW without the labour. It works on the fact that if its over the money limit, you have to pay for it full whack - Ive seen the look on customers faces and its not happy!!

If you think something is up with the car, by all means take it, but for the amount of hassle it causes to get work done under the warranty it make not be worth the bother.

kind of like insurance in my opinion, they try and get as much money out of you as possible, and make it as difficult as possible to get it back off them in the event of making a claim (not that i have ever had too). my philosophy is get the most basic level of comprehensive cover they offer (or dont in the case of the warranty) then put the extra you would have spent on a higher level of cover (or warranty) in a high iterest savings account. That way when you come to need it (maybe not for years) it will be there in the bank + interest and not wasted in the insurers/dealers pocket (& you can always dip in to for a few choice mods

)

Yeh thats a fair philosophy, I'd end up spending the money though
