Modding 1.0i engine advice

I know I won't be able to do much but does anyone know what I can do and add to this?

I've posted before in regards to engine mods but I would like to know which item exactly would fit on and if anyone has any links to that particular item or similar it would be great.

As for engines I don't know much but I've climbed around in there with very basic knowledge, all I hear is stuff like turbo, intercooler and it baffles me so an explanation would be nice if anything fancy is recommended

hey, yea sorry for slightly nabbing this post but yea im in the same boat, ive got a 1.0l and would like to kno of anything to enhance power etc.

and i know its not popular, and probs better just to get a bigger engine but tht'll come later after insurance falls and i ave some decent money lol

just cant afford insurance on a 1.4 0r 1.6 especially then to mod it like heck

Unfortunetly theres not much you can do to increase power that's enough to quench your thirst from a 1.0L Turbo's and intercoolers are for projects on bigger engines as a 1.0l probably wouldn't be able to cope with the stresses unless major heart surgery was done! Even then your wallet would be too light and you couldn't afford the insurance anyway. it simply wouldn't be worth it in any means.

All you can do is the most common things like exhaust, induction, manifold etc. best thing to do really is to save up without doing them mods and buying a bigger engined car later. You'd hopefully get cheaper insurance, get a bigger car and leave it for a while. This would keep you happy moving up from a 1.0 and then do mods in the future once your bored with that.

What do manifolds do exactly?

Also I been lookin maybe a turbo is possible

Lupo 1.2 / 3 Has a turbo
Parati 1.0 / 4 Has a turbo

Do you think either of them could be fitted and how much hassle do you think it would be in a garage with some experts helping me out for free?

Manifolds/ exhaust systems allow the gases to escape faster if allowed to unlike the standard restrictive ones.

Can't really help you on Turbo questions. I do know, its a major job and can cost a lot. most guys who turbo 6n's always do it to the 16v's cos the engine is big enough and good on power.

kl cheers noz think al just save for a bigger engine, and on the subject which would you reccomend to slam into a car?
ive heard crazy stuff like a vr6 enginge and tht rear wheel drive 6n with a motorbike engine, but im talking about easy transplant but good overall engine.
would the 1.4 16v be the best bet?
or would say a 1.8 from an old gold or sumthing?
any help or advice grateful, thnks

I'd say enjoy the 1.0 as it is, wait and save up for a better car.

A 16v polo will be cheaper to buy than converting a 1.0 to 16v. It will also be cheaper to insure. Don't forget that you will need to uprate the brakes and suspension too.

And if you can't afford the insurance for bigger engined polos, you probably can't afford the extra insurance when you declare induction kits, exhausts etc.

I'm looking into the turbo's to see if a fit is possible but there's other issues ontop of wether it can just fit or be made to fit.

I know it's a waste of money but my side of doing it isn't for just performance, its more of doing something that hasnt been done as I am actually planning to buy the 16V 1.4 MK4 polo model or the 1.8 Mark Golf GTI Mark2 next year (I'm a fan of older cars). But the whole upgrade idea is more of a side project a few months down the line when a new car is present and I can work on this one.

i got a 1.4 16v and it took me absolute months to actually get hold of one, and they were all on auto trader, so i dont know how your going to find a 1.4 16v engine :S

actually a few scrapyards ive been to have them but only 2 scrapyards with one each.... i was looking for bumpers etc but they were gone... just the outer shell and some bits and bobs inside, but they had the engine in a seperate area.... so i can get one.... but does anyone kno how much it would cost to transplant an engine?
is it do-able to do yourself, or better to let a qualified proffessional do it?

If you know what your doing then DIY only then. Transplanting a 16v lump needs atleast stopping upgrades, engine, ECU, loom etc etc. If you want a project then mostly commonly you could squeeze in a 1.8T lump in there. No point spending all that money and effort if you'd get bored of the performance after a short while. 16v's are good for what they are BUT they ain't lightening fast! Even bigger transplants would increase your insurance like crazy which was a major issue for you in the first place.

Like NOZ said, it's more hassle than it's worth to transplant a 16v engine. The only case I can see for an engine transplant, as opposed to buying the original car in the first place, is if the engine you want was never available in that car in the first place, e.g. 1.8T, VR6.

Engine transplant will likely cost you more than it would to buy the original. It will certainly cost you more to insure, and it will have poorer resale value than a proper 16v. Does it really sound worth it?

The above statement is true. But it depends on how much you love your car i guess! If you are really adamant that you want to turbo your 1.0L i say go for it lol. Would be a good laugh if nothing else. Ive looked into turbo-ing just about everything ive ever owned and although its doable its gonna cost you alot. Ill share what i know on account of boredom:

Right so the basics for a turbo are these:

turbo
intercooler
all asociated piping
Turbo manifold
programmable ECU or a conversion to old skool carbs
(this is due to setting up the air fuel mixture. The ECU you currently have isnt to versatile so a programmable one is needed. Or you convert to Carbs so you can set everything up manually.

Now with that, unless ive missed something, you can turbo your car. Thats all probaby gonna set you back about 500 quid maybe more ECU's are expensive bits of kit. If you were to DIY it then you could get away with keeping the price fairly low. Then theres other things to consider as obviously your engine was not designed to take turbo power.

Well as we mentioned the 1.0L engine can't cope with power increase. This means you'll have to strengthen the internal components of the engine, which drags the costs up more.

right, well i dont think id turbo a 1.0L personally, tht was polo-sib's idea not mine, just wanted to kno how his went.

if anything id put at least a 16v in but as u said it would be better for something kno ones done, so its ideally unique

anyone got any suggestions of wats not been done but would be awesome if completed.... now thinking of making this car a project car and get another 16v to kick around in... and my dad used to be a mechanic so he knows a s**t about engines etc a told him he could help and teach me as i go along

so any awesome engines anyone want to see in a wee polo ?
