6N2 GTI engine into Mk2 Coupe

Post by karmacarzi »

I've got a 6N2 GTi that has had a rear end smack and I'd like to transfer the motor into my 1272cc 1983 Mk2 Polo Coupe. Has anyone undertaken this sort of swap before? If so, what's the deal with engine mounts? Do I use the crap pedal box and Gearbox from the GTi, or is there another alternative.

I know this is a massively vague questions, but I'm just trying to formulate a plan before I start spending any money on it. I have the complete GTI ready to be stripped and everything inclusing the fuel tank and pump is still usable for the swap.

Cheers

To be honest I don't think it would be worth it, there's plenty of better engines with better gearboxes out there. You'd have to use the GTi pedal box and gearbox, or the lupo-6 speed (but that would take an awful amount of effort!).

Any chance that GTi had leather interior :P ?

I'd like to use a G40 motor, but this GTi lump already has throttle bodies and some lairy (I've been told they're Schrick!) cams in it. It's apparently good for around 170ish bhp, so if I can fabricate the mounts myself or find someone who's already done the swap it should make a half decent trackday toy. Plus, I got the salvage really, really cheap from a local breakers and I'd love to try and do this DIY in my garage if possible.

I know there's a guy called Mike who owns a UPS Brown Mk2 Coupe that's running a 6N2 GTI motor and a 5-speed 'box but I can't get hold of him for love nor money.

Thanks for the info though, I'll keep pursuing more on mounting the lump.

Someone's already had the door cards and rear seats out of it, but the fronts are black leather if they're any use to ya?

Cheers people, I've since been in touch with the fella who owns the Brown Mk2 and apparently it drops it on standard Mk2 mounts with the exception of the top gearbox one that needs to be fabbed up with a bit of time and patience. A seriously sweet car though, hey?

Oh yeah, look out for a feature on the brown car coming to a VW mag next month... ;-)

Cheers

They're in ok condition. The car had done 72k and there's only minor wear lines - no tears, rips, burns or anything, on the right hand side of the drivers seat. I'll try and get some pictures up once I figure out how to use Picture bucket, or whatever it's called!

I'm in Greenwich, SE London.

Cheers

They're called "Berg-Cup arches" usually made in fiberglass and roughly about £170 a set. Someone on CP sells them. :D
