Finally gave way :'(

Post by NOZ »

I knew there was something wrong with the gearbox and have recently thought i'd get it fixed while the cars still running fine. However, now its my turn to sit on the bench cos the gearbox finally gave in last night :( Limped back home with the engine running rough cos've the gearbox, which sounds like a bearings gone or something.

As everyone knows its a bigger mission to find a 16v gearbox then it is to find Nemo so i'm on the hunt for one. Give me a shout if anyone knows of one for sale as I need it badly cos I can't live without my car, runs all day everyday so i'm foobared for now! I have to drive my dads brown mk1 Civic saloon to work now, which is more embarassing then normal cos it doesn't have a single straight panel :?

The joys of owning a polo :x

Ahh man, not you aswell, you still coming to Eastern in May (in another car) ??? What are you going to do, recon or breakers? Deffo feeling for you mate as I know how it feels, especially when she's parked up. I can give you the number of a place in Sidcup that'll be happy to rid you of £600.00, straight up guys they were, I had absolutely no issues with them, after care service was like nothing I had experienced before. Did I tell you I was also a coompulsive liar.

I know this scrapper had a 16v earlier this month that he's breaking:

His mobile is 07796771588.

You could always put a 6n 8v box in for now, while you rebuild your 16v one? It would just be a bit over-geared.

f**k it man put a 1.0L box in it! should shift quicker!

See ever problem as an oppurtunity, and not just an oppurtunity to spend money lol. Now you could well look into gearbox ratios and make your car a little bit quicker off the line.

If it were me id defo get an early mk4 8v box as the ratios on them all should be shorter, and typically it seems the origin al mk4's were more reliable then the later ones. All that gadgetry and wizadry seems to bring the cars down a bit lol. My car doesnt even have a lambda probe in the manifold! Its brilliant lol. Car hasnt failed me yet.... tilll the accident... ok maybe you do need the abs though lol.

lol at you guys! Hope im not sitting without a car for long like phat controller!

My local said he'll get it re-cond and I haven't found another box anywhere so probably go with recon. However, said the price depends on what internals are broken so I won't get a price till its taken apart on Monday and hopefully get it back wednesday evening.

Was thinking of a 1.6 box which is available but I do use the top end (shhhh) a lot on motorways. 131mph from an old polo ain't too shabby!

True thats not bad. But fook that you got a 1400! it was never intended for top speed, its all about the 0-whatever... Get the 1.6 box! Give steves volkswagen breakers a call he will probably have one!!!

Cheers guys,

I'e tried Steve's who only have a 1.6 box. I know it wasn't intended for top speeds but O don't do motorways too often. I do town driving often and already have 3 points on license. God knows how i'll survive with a faster accelerating motor for point to point driving!!!!!

When i'm not bothered I drive like a cabby though; 1st, 2nd, 5th, and relax!

I'll try audivwparts, thanks mate. Another fellow members got a box so i'll try getting that. If not then mines being re-cond for max £250-450 (depends on damage) by wednesday!

 Got the car back and it feels totally different. no more worries about the pedal box creaking as its feather light now with the clutch. Biting points a bit low but thats not adjustable right? remember it being self adjusting.

Anyway spent £420 re-condition and £110 labour and got the car back within 4 days of work with a years guarantee.

good deal or did I get raped?

Regardless i'm happy I can drive my baby now 8)

good to hear you have the car back sir. I have a feeling mines on the way out now aswell lol. Second gear is being peculiar when i change up. Lots of clunkyness. Bad juju indeed.

I dunno abot the price though. Sounds alrigth to me it is, afterall, a bit of a bastard whore job to do!

you have NO idea how much I miss it when been driving my dads piece of tat. It was so embarrassing driving it and especially in the sun having to wind down the window so everyone could see me. Wanna put the music up when a good tune comes on then can't cos i'll only draw attention to myself!

Feels like a different car now the box is fixed I guess the price is good for the time taken. Especially after seeing Mr Phat go through it with the car off road 6 months and paying around £800! and his wasn't even the 'CWX' box! Everywhere I looked they'd say to give them around 2weeks when mine took 2 days to re-con then 2 days taking off and fitting again!

Anyway, pockets got a huge hole in it so start saving up all over again. I'm never gonna manage to sort the front bumper out if things keep going wrong!

Lemeph if you need a garage for re-con, i've always got the garage number!
