Creaky Pedal Box a Problem

Post by Andy1.6 »

Just figured out that my pedal box squeaks when I press the brake or the clutch. Is it a problem or is it just an annoyance? Because it doesn't bother me at the moment!

It maybe, take it to a garage and ask them to have a look at the weld.

It takes about 2 mins with a torch

Yep mines creaking a lot. Its a sign that the weld where the clutch side is is breaking. Before it breaks I suggest you get a small piece of metal welded across that weld for strengthening.

Its a common problem amongst vags and you may find the pedal will go straight to the floor and nothing happens. Its a sign that the clutch is too stiff for it or the cable twisted forcing strain on the box. Can be costly to replace as the steering etc needs to come out to get to it. had mine changed twice in 4 days with new boxes cos didn't change the clutch as suggested with the first repalcement.

it's the pedal box that's shearing the weld off.... so i would start by looking there.

^^ Exactly. May be difficult to see but removing the small glove box helps for viewing. You'll see where the weld is and for some reason vw thought they'd rush that job leaving a crap weld!

owww i was meaning to post abou tthis for ageeeeeeees.

my clutchpeddle creaks after iv been using it a while. etc on the way to college i go up a hill full of traffic from bottom to top. and i normally just keep it on the biting point all the way up and release it to ease forward. when i get to the top it creaks like that. but when i drive normally its usually fine. how much would it cost to have it done at a garage?

I never got the current box welded but changed it twice in one week :(

The parts around £40 from VW but its the labour which is costly. I spent £150 for a single job.

I've noticed my creaking box has gone now and the clutch is light as a feather now i've changed the gearbox. Never thought that could be the problem for a creaking box but guess it could be so maybe peoples gearboxes could be bad if not the clutch itself. If you have a bad gearbox putting strain on the clutch then it would continue to the pedal linkage.

So re-inforce the weld in good time or check; cable, clutch and finally gearbox.

Just bolt it when it breaks.

Total cost about £0.50.

Fiddly mind.

pressure from the clutch would cause the linkage to break. Easy fix is to get the piece welded where appropriate as mentioned earlier.
