Wheel + tyre weights

Post by david burton »

Out of idle interest, I weighed my TT alloy + tyre and came up with this:

17.6kg: TT alloy + 100% worn 205x40x17 BF GoodRich tyre
21.1kg: TT alloy + 0% worn 205x40x17 Yoko Parada tyre

With new Yoko Paradas this came out as a surprising result!

I couldn't believe the extra weight. But a rough calc of 8mm tread depth gives 3kg extra per tyre (if tyre rubber is roughly the same density as water).

Will be weighing the steel and 15" alloy tomorrow.

continuing the theme:

16.5kg: 15" steel wheel + 0% worn 195x55 firestone
16.5kg: 15" sport alloy wheel + 20% worn 195x55 firestone

so, if you want the lightest wheel, stick with steels.
