Went & looked at a ’96 mk4 Polo, which is really tidy & extremely clean. Documented low mileage, main dealer history until recently, local reg etc.
One slight downer is it only has one key/remote, how easy is it to get a replacement, main stealer job or can I get a blank, have it cut & then program it at the stealers or via VAG-COM myself ?

A new blank key and cut would cost you around £5-10, but the key would not contain an immobilizer chip.

So best thing to do is find a blank key with an immobilizer chip, good places for this would be ebay. Once you got a blank key with immobilizer chip you will need to get it cut, this will cost you no more than £5. The next bit is expensive, the programming of the immobilizer chip would cost somewhere between £52-82 (the price is dependent on whether you know the 5 digit code to the car) if the security code is not known then go dealership. Expect to pay around £82, also you will require all documents to the car and personal details as well as the car needs to be bought down when getting the key programmed.

The one with the chip is a 'transponder key' I believe. I had a second key made from the single one I had which cost £35 to get it programmed and cut.

I got one for £20. Small electrical car shops are cheapest I guess.
