MK5 SPEEDO PROBLEM

Post by vdub123 »

Hi, i have a mk5 2000 Polo 1.4. The speedo has stopped working for and im not sure what the problem is. The lights, indicator, odometer and time work but the speed, rev meter, petrol and temperature gauges do not work at all. Was wondering if some knows how to fix it! Could it be a fuse??? If not, then...

By the way, where is the fuse box and what fuse would need changing for the speedometer?

Thanks :D

Worth checking the sensor on the gearbox. Mine got disconnected after a service. Noticed my speedo and revs weren't working, along with my odometer. The petrol guage also went down to empty then back up again

Look at the cubby hole to the right of your steering wheel, there is a section of plastic that you can pull away in it, the fusebox is behind there.

Theres a white card of the reverse side of the plastic that will has a number of icons. Match the pictures on the card with them in the manual to find out which fuse is which.

It may not be the problem, but it's always good to know.

Thanks for the help guys!!! Checked the fuse and its not the fuse. Spoke to a VW specialist and he said it can either be the dash board cluster or the wiring. Does anyone know how much the cluster is and whether it is simple to fit? Thanks :D

Could be wiring, on the mark 4 (which later uses the same cluster as the mk 5, I think) it has a few wires under the bonnet, if one is not earthed correctly it could cause the speedo and rev's not to work.

I took of some engine cover brackets in the past and a cable was earthed there, didn't take much notice of it until next day I realized halfway to work my speedo didn't work, gave me a WTF 30min later I realized what I had done, so have a look under the bonnet and see if any cables are loose, disconnected or unearthed. Don't make the same mistake I did and earth it to something that's not metal  otherwise you solve nothing :(
