bulbs behind ventilation controls

does anyone know how to get at the bulbs behind the ventilation controls. i have tried pulling the middle one but it didnt want to budge. do i have to turn it to a cerain position? or am i not pulling it hard enough.

you may have to tug it a bit harder.

remember its a VW so build quality is quite tough :)
