to be totally honest (no offense to the GTi owners) but speed or power isnt really what the gti is about, considering you can buy a 106 gti for much cheaper with better handling & a fair deal faster its not chosen for that.
Things like swift sports / mini coopers (not cooper S) & similar smallish hatches with 1.6 engines are generally doable because of their weight. VTR's are generally not a problem, 106 gtis & VTS's will always have a fair leg on the straight & massively on the corners...
Gti's are booootful cars but in my ownership i didnt really race 'that' much, the odd 40 year old would try it in his volvo estate (Strangely) and the gti always did its job but I rarely got raced by anything sporty, the cars you want to race & brag about are generally too fast & dont wait around to find out if you are
In the end i lowered mine around 120mm+ & whacked on some dishy RM's...and spent the whole time cruising low & slow with my xenons on looking rude & avoiding any small stones in the road that would make my suspension bottom out! best place for a gti in my opinion...looking wicked...
