Hi guys
just after a bit of help
bought a polo 1.4 75bhp 16v 6n2
when i bought it , on way home emission light came on and car went into what feels like safety mode.. i took it back, by time i got back problem cleared up, garage checked the fault and appeared to be a missfire on cylinder 1 , plugs where changed fault then went and off i went a happy chap..
ive had the car three weeks now and the problem has happend once a week ago, cleared up then straight away, but now its more consistent and seems to be every other day, the light will flash, i will leave the car and then the light stays on solid, then overnight the light goes out completley.
i have had a look through my cars history, which is all main dealer...
the previous owner reported a problem to vw on 11/10/2007 of rough running. the print out advises..
carried out investigation into rough running. Checked fault memory, Misfire on cylinder 1&2 , alo when testing water pump not working,
Garage then replaces spark leads & water pump.
Previous owner then went back to vw on 29/10/2007 complaining of rough running again, print out this time advises
carried out investigation into rough running, Ok t time of tests but is intermitant fault. Was No 1 & No 2 cylinders last time. Checked compressions - all are different, 3 bar difference is limit - See print ( no print attached ) maybe valves not seated will let problem develop..
I have also noticed that the previous owner had a new lamnbda sensor and lead set on 03/08/3007 , seems strange they had two sets of leads in 2 months?
I have nothing further since then, although this work was 10 months ago so surley there can of been a major problem..
The car runs absolutley sweet apart from then the light flashes.. Starting to worry me a bit now..
Does anyone have any ideas??
Thanks
Jay

I doubt it.. My EGR Valve went.. and mine didn't go into "Safety Mode" Although it did do all the flashing on and off of the engine check light..
I found that mine would clear the faults over night.. that was when it was only intermittent and was not being logged in the ECU. When the problem got worse the light never went off.. was permanently on and it was logged on the ECU with two faults for the EGR Valve..
It reported like this;
2 Faults Found:
17811 - EGR System: Regulation Divergence
P1403 - 35-00 - -
16785 - EGR System: Insufficient Flow
P0401 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: 0010 0101
If you can get hold of a VAG-COM cable and have a look then it might indicate what the fault is.. unless its the cylinders again.. which is a bit odd and I wouldn't have a clue as to the problem.. could be anything??

I've had the exact same problem with mine over the past 12months. Had it checked out by 3 different garages who hooked up the diagnostic software and had 3 different diagnostis;
1st - Llambda probes - I didnt agree with this as the engine was running fine, so I took it elswhere
2nd - Faulty Speed Sensor?? Not sure where that came from but they wanted to charge £150 to fix, NO WAY
3rd - Faulty Temperature sensor, was replaced for £10 and the engine management reset. This solved the problem for a couple of months, then it came back.
Not sure what to do now, seems like this could go on forever and bleed money from me without fixing anything.
Is this only a problem with the 02/03 models?
