Just done over 70 what?

If it was the pedal box, you'd feel a creak in the clutch as you depressed it. A generally harsh or scatty feeling clutch will relate to the clutch itself or the cable more likely.

Has it had a clutch change before? If so when, if not what's your milage?

My clutch sounds like a barn door when you push the pedal down so pretty sure its the pedal box thats screwed, too skint at the moment to repair it though so I'm driving with my fingers crossed! Hoping it holds out til I go traveling!

Pedal boxes have a tendency to weaken and just snap, if yours is creaking I'd get it checked out A.S.A.P, it can cause a whole world of pain. All they need is a reinforced weld.

70k is an awful lot for a clutch, (What engine du have?) If it's not that I'd seriously consider one, (For the GTi) GSF do a SACHs clutch kit for under £90 delivered - Quality price. If not GTi, then I think the options are broader and cheaper, not 100% sure though.

Anyway as I said it's likely to be cable related also. Best bet is to take it down to the a garage and get them to check the pedal box weld (Just has to poke a torch up into the driver's footwell), and have a feel of the clutch. It probably will need replacing but they will be able to confirm.

Then just purchase a clutch cable direct from VW (cost less than £30) and tell the garage to put that in whilst they're at it if needed. If not you can always return it at no charge (clutch cable is classed as a non specific/special order part, so will require no handling charge if returned).

Hope this helps.

Yeh mate, just over 70k on a 7 year old odd car, the clutch will probably need replacing.
