Polo 6 Speed Conversion?

Post by DonnaPoloSE »

Hi, I have a 1996 MkIV SE with a 1.4 8v engine and a 5 speed gearbox. I'd really like a 6 speed though as it's so noisy at 70mph and it can barely do 95 due to the gearing... so having a 6 speed would really help with keeping the revs down at 'high' velocity and give the car more speed.

Does anyone know of a suitable 'box that is compatible with my engine and if it's possible at all? Don't want to spend mega money or change my engine I just think it's where I should start if I want to change things on it.

Thanks

Donna

A question that many have asked, including me! And the answer in short is no, a lupo gti box is a 6-speed unit however to convert to fit the polo engine would prove to be prohibitively expensive!

Oh, and Welcome to uk-polos! :D

there really isn't a cheap or easy way to sort out that particular problem. oh, and you think a 1.4 box is loud? try a 1.0! lower gearing....
the only way i can get rid of the noise is turn up my music.

My old 1.4 8v used to do 105mph  and ran smooth upto 85-90 if I recall.

You can't do much then fitting a 16v box. However, by doing so you'd increase ever gear ration making them longer and increasing the accel time a lot.

My 1.4 8v is the same, runs smooth at 85 & when you push on the 'go pedal' for a while, will wind up to 110-115! Which for a small car is amazing!

Hi again, I've been corrected.... the Polo will do 100mph but it's at the red line.. we wanted to pull the gearing down so we can do 120 or thereabouts.

What size tyres are standard cause I'm not sure if it has standard ones on, that might be an issue. It's currently running 175/65 R13s on five-spoke Rader rims (really want to get some ATS Cups!!)

If I'm doing over 100 in my polo, the smallest gust of wind makes me think it's going to flip.
