Magically appearing problems

Post by randomage »

Just out of interest, has anyone come back from university (or a long stint away) to their cars, to find a fair few things wrong that weren't there when they left them? So far I've had an empty rad, a 3 month old starter motor completely pack up and need replacing, and a hole in my exhaust. I've been back since sunday night, and driving since monday. The car has been more or less untouched since I left it in september. No joke. The starter motor only lasted til tuesday night, and the 'ole made its presence known weds. It's starting to get on my nerves slightly...

Random, long stints of being parked up aren't really good for any vehicle are they. I guess the rad is most likely explained by a leak, starter could have just stuck and the dreaded mild steel worm could have had a fine meal on your exhaust. We had our t25 parked up for 11 months and when we came to put it back on the road, the rad had developed a leak and every single brake line had corroded so badly that we could have done with a mortgage to cover the repairs. Trouble is you just can't get a mortgage nowadays can you!

Got the starter replaced and i spoke to the mech that did the job, and he tested it out of the car, and apparently it seemed like something was being ground up inside, like an inner part had come loose. Empty rad is a big sign of a leak, so i'll be keeping a close eye on that one! The older the car, the more serious the problems as well. i suspect if i had mine parked up for near enough a year, it wouldnt have as much work needed as that!

Things like that happen and mostly with things concerning liquid related parts such as rads etc.

Funny though because my mate only left his mk2 Golf standing for 2 weeks and now it won't even start up!
