Bog standard GTI + remap = XXXhp?

Post by MarcoPolo »

The missus has given me the green light to remap her Polo (06 plate) when the VW warranty expires, which is a month or so away :D

At the moment it is 100% stock and I'm interested in seeing what the engine can make with just software changes.

What hp figures do you guys normally see from this mod alone?

I'd be happy with 200hp, but with the nanny state boost controlling mapped out. It would be a MASSIVELY better car for it.

I've known Vince at Stealth Racing for a long time, so he's my preferred mapper.

Think a lot of places claim 200 - 210bhp but think it bout 190 -195bhp in realality.

i agree with kenny just under 200 is about bang on

i have a more-bhp one which is quality as its silky smooth

some people go fro really agresssive maps

i think the smoother the better as you can use your power more often

Many factors to this....

How much do you like your engine ?
Do you like smooth progressive power or full on see-saw ?
What fuel do you want to run - super or normal ?

Power figures are very often grossly excagerated... lots of standard 150s that hit the rolling roads make anywhere between 180-195...

But the 1.8T with small intercoolers never really show their full potential on rolling roads... on the real road the intercooler can be kept much more cool.... so making much more power...

A stanadard car shouldnt really run more than 1.0-1.1 bar (almost twice standard boost) because of things like high EGT (exhaust gas temps) which are really bad for the turbo... the car measures all this and if it sees too high then dumps fuel... so fuel economy is bad and power drops.... and intake temps climb and again power drops.. knock starts..ign timing is pulled.. and again you loose power...

So as the old addage goes... LESS IS MORE.... ;-)

Its why things like stage 2 exist.. if the hardware is modded then you can go stronger...

Cheers guys

I'd prefer a smooth map because it's the missus's daily, but I want to have some fun when I drive it too 8)

Thanks for the informative post more-bhp. I agree entirely with your sentiments. I don't think ours is ~ 190hp though. Certainly feels like 150hp to me!

What I want to get rid of is the sensation of mega boost at 2000rpm, and then nothing. It drives me up the wall! One thing I dislike about the standard map is it's tailored more for urban blasting it seems. I want to hold the boost as long as possible so it's got some top end vigour aswell. If it were my car, I'd definitely be doing the Stage 2 and 3 antics, but the missus wants it to be reliable and last, hence software only at this stage!

Cheers

P.S. When do you guys change your oil? Ours is still on the longlife service (20K is it?) which is FAR too long for a turbo engine imo.

Ah, I see what you mean.

Well 190 would be nice from just software :D I can tell the Polo is another VW that's waiting to be let off it's leash, but I know where it ends though. Starts with software....then bigger turbo / intercooler.... then strengthened internals....4 pots to stop you....then more boost.....gearbox shatters....O2M conversion....and before you know you've spent £30K

OK I'll get the oil servicing put down to 10K. Does anyone know which block that is in VAG-COM?

Cheers

I change the oil every 3K on my Corrado, LOL! I'll remember that about the Forge intercooler, cheers.

OK, the missus's Polo. Been using it every day as she's away at a conference and it's really annoying me at the moment! VAG-COM'd it, no faults at all, but it just feels so flat and gutless if I put my foot down hard. If I ease in the gas, it's better but it doesn't feel right. It's not lumpy, misfiring, rough or anything, just flat!

I think I need to get it chipped sooner, rather than later!
