My First Car
My First Car
Hi, its my first time on here and my first time modding a car, so do be gentle as I am totally naive atm when it comes to modding cars.
Last Sunday I went with dad and purchased my first car, a beauty; Polo 9n 1.9 GT TDI. After having it a week, I've discovered this site.
What kind of mods can I do to the car to make it run better?
Also I've been milling around on this site and have seen some cars with the chrome grill for the 9n. Do you know where I can get this? And in your honest opinions does it suit the Black 9n?
Thanks in advance. Deep

Re: My First Car
its a nice first car for sure
a bit quicker than my little 1.0 arosa i had as my first car.
Not sure what you mean by make it run better if you mean more performance a remap would be the way to go coupled with a pd160 intake and panel filter and straight through exhaust system.
Aside from this other things could include coilovers , better anti roll bars , bigger brakes 312mm from a audi TT for example, other than those suggestions theres a guide around here somewhere with the common mods for 9Ns
Hope this helps
Congrats on the new car

Re: My First Car
Heya deep,
Congrats on the car, I've just had the same happen to me, lucky us
All ready crashed it though...
Anyway, Common starter mods seem to be; Air filter, exhaust, alloys/tires and maybe a strut brace.
You could take it further and go for a suspention upgrade and so on but I would guess you would have the same problem as me, insurance.
Telling your insurance that your going to change anything at all would be risking a forced diet

Re: My First Car
welcome
all the mods that have been said are good.
i'm 20 and buying a fabia VRS (same as your car just a skoda) and to declare the mods i want on it will cost me £2500 thats with 3 years no claim bonus. (on confused, sure i could get it cheaper as its £700 standard)
declaring exhaust, springs/shocks (-40mm) and a remap (approx 180bhp). so i think performance wise you should hold back until your get a few years experiance. 130bhp is alot for a 1st car.

Yeah fair point and the GT doesnt have traction control standard maybe you have it as it was an option?
so is a handfull in the wet even standard
Re: My First Car
Hey. Thanks for all the replies.
The car defo pulls and Im loving it. I know its dumb, but I wasn't sure if I had to declare the remap. Would it be possible for me to ask the insurer if aftre a re-map whether they'll still insure me?
Yeah I've been looking at some tyres, which are best to get; as the ones that came with the car are absoluttaly knackred? Im keeping the car on 16's, so what tyre sizes should I go for?

Re: My First Car
they should still insure ya just at a higher price, you could decide not to declair it and they wont know unless they log boost requests etc and compaire i dont think , but if they found out you would have invalid insurance affecting you and others?.
Tyre wise standard size is 205/45/16 , popular choices are toyo proxies tr1 and goodyear eagle f1s

Thats what I was thinking, its highly unlikely they'll go to the trouble of actually checking.GT_Raven wrote:they should still insure ya just at a higher price, you could decide not to declair it and they wont know unless they log boost requests etc and compaire i dont think , but if they found out you would have invalid insurance affecting you and others?.

Thanks for the tyre sizes also bro. I'll go out tomorrow and get some. I was talking to one of dads friends he said he can do me some continentals at a decent price.
But I'm torn between conts. and F1's, F1's in my opinion look alot prettier.
Re: My First Car
Continentals sport are very good indeed, if you can get them on a good deal then your on for a win

agree 100 % contis are great once worn in a bit , I am running dunlop sports and the grip in the dry so far is pretty good on par with the conti but quieter.
Re: My First Car
Last time I bought conti they were £135 each, on my last car
Re: My First Car
I've been quoted £150 for 2 tyres, so I'll take the guy up on his offer.chewy wrote:Last time I bought conti they were £135 each, on my last car
As for other mods, I was thinking of getting an induction kit; in your opinion, worth it?I know it won't make a huge perfomance difference it beign a TDi and all, but Im hoping it'll make the car sound alot better. What are peoples general consensus on getting induction kits anyway.
PS. just like to say, having been on here a few days, I'm loving it, never knew these kind of forms existed, and I've learnt loads, Thanks everyone.

No point on an induction kit mate...and on a Diesel, it'll just make it sound like a tractor. The original airbox is good enough to flow >200 BHP. I'd just swap out the swap OEM air filter for a green cotton one and maybe perhaps add a PD160 intake.

Thanks for the sound advice. Could you point me in the right direction of a place where I can get a Green cotton filter and a PD160 intake; for a decent price.K.I.T.T. wrote:No point on an induction kit mate...and on a Diesel, it'll just make it sound like a tractor. Re: My First Car
Green filters can be got from here:
http://www.green-filter.co.uk/product_i ... _id=205760
Regarding the PD160 intake, it consistes of 2 parts and can be got from any Seat dealer for about £70.
Not sure how much of a difference it'll make without a remap. Then again, I don't know if my green filter makes much of a difference either as I got it installed at the same time mine was remapped, so couldn't tell!
