Alternator Loom for VW polo mk2

Post by seanom »

Hello all
My name is Sean, nice to meet you all :) sorry to get straight into it without the regular welcome post

I own a H reg 1.3 petrol VW polo, and recently discovered I had cremated my wires from the alternator to the engine, According to VW I will need to replace the entire engine wire loom this of course I don't want to do. My first question would be if anyone has or can point me onto a locations where I could find the right wires?

Secondly I think that the wire may have cremated as some fuses may have been in the wrong fuse holders.

From the battery I have 2 Glass Fuses, one is a plain red wire the other a red wire with black strip, currently the red wire has a 7amp fuse and the black stripe has a 10amp fuse can anyone tell me if these are the correct sizes?

And lastly if anyone knows of a good scrapyard around the East Anglia region where I could maybe get a new alternator/wiring loom please let me know

Thank you

Just a follow up I bought new cable and managed to re-wire the existing alternator up, however upon doing so smoke started pouring out of the alternator, I am assuming this means that the alternator is in fact buggered and not that I have wired it incorrectly. (I just replaced the wires like for like when wiring a 27amp wire for the alternator to starter motor and 8amp wire to the instrument console).

On a side note, does anyone know where I would the fuse for this wire if there is one?, I have two glass in-line fuses from the battery, and a fusebox on the right hand side but I am unable to determine which if any? are the fuse for the wiring as I do not want to set the next wire on fire again.

Thanks
Sean
