Engine management light on

My sister in law has joined the polo gang recently by purchasing a basic 1.2 polo 3dr so plenty of scope to improve the visual looks any way not so much the performance. Any back to the point of this thread, the engine management light came on and stayed put until the cam sensor was replaced. I am wondering if this is a common occuring fault and has anyone else had this problem.

this happend to my g/fs 1.4 tdi.and it wouldnt start wen it did till all the doors were closed.
guy from VW came out and pluged it to see what was happen and he just reset the sensor and its been fine ever since.
