Flashing handbrake light?

When two or more people get in the back of my 1.4 MPI the handbrake light beeps and flashes at me for a while, then today, it happened mid braking and the brake pedal suddenly had more travel half way through the braking process, felt horrible. It was fine after that, with the light still on for a while, does anyone know what this could be?

normally flashing hand brake light is fluid level, but if could also be a fault with the handbrake which it may not think that it is released now and again
