You need to pull the gaiter frame out of the console, turn it inside out and cut the brass tag off that goes around the blue plastic.

If you want to re-use the vw knob, it can be screwed back on.

Removing the gaiter from the VW knob will make them both unusable if i remember right

Yes, thats called a gaiter, your best bet is to get a new knob and gaiter.

Gear knobs on a factory gearstick are somewhat difficult. The Polo gearstick isnt threaded - rather, its held in place with a circlip, so any new gearknob would need bonding on.

i recently changed my gaitor and nob to the gti one, i didnt have the gold clip with the gti one, so i jus loosened the gold clip off my standard gear stick, took it off , put the gti stick and gaitor on and used a crimping tool to stick the gold clip back in place and it was rock solid! the thing wouldnt move out of place !

i dont remember any clips on mine  lol, i just peeled the bottom of the gaitor and then pulled it all off, ive now got a new gear gaitor on but do i need to buy something that holds it to the top of the gaitor to a new gearknob? otherwise it would slip down ( if you get what i mean ) lol
thanks

too much hard work?! you gotta be kidding me!

pull the bottom of the gaitor, it'll come free.
pull the gaitor over the knob, it'll expose the clip.
pop the clip off, job done.

gearknobs and gaitors come together, not seperate, so you know what your looking for.
