16v: Mk4 or Mk5?

Post by 97poloCL »

As title, considering getting one but not sure which would be best.

mk4 has more power, cheaper.
mk5 is newer, probably in better condition, ABS etc.

just wanting to know which is faster (0-60, 0-100), which is more reliable (eg gearbox), which is nicer/more fun to drive, more efficient..
looks wise im not really sure which i prefer either :S

positives and negatives of both would be perfect..

thanks :D

According to Parkers

Mark 4, 0-60 is 10.2 seconds,
Mark 5, 0-60 is 10.1 seconds,

Exactly the same really speaking.

If you ask me I'd say go for the mark 5 (not biased at all haha), although the exterior looks of the mark4 are fast growing on me, the interior of the mark5 is in a completely different league to the mark4.

I'd say MK5, again like Tim I'm not biased at all lol. I think the Mk5's look better. Just my opinion though.

major selling point for the mk5 is the completely different modern interior and the whole body is galvanised so no rust unlike on the 6n which are prone to rust.

only problem you'll have is finding a mk5 16v, since they are quite rare. if your going for a 16v I reckon you should just opt for the GTi

Both Nice cars, nothing against the MK4 but for me the MK5 is the better option.

All MK5 owners are going to say that though haha

I agree with Haris , why not try going for a GTI?

i'd love to have a gti, but am struggling to find the money to firstly buy it and then insure it as its about 400 extra than either of the 16v's..
like the mk5 alot because of the interior and other updated bits, but finding it hard to find a nice one for the right money, i do love the mk4's though, and love how they look once they're done up :D and have the perfect wheels for one!

so basically, if i could afford a gti, i'd have one riiiight now! but otherwise, if i find a mk5 one ill grab that..if not ill make do with the mk4 as i like the old(er)-school vdubs and the mk4s are still loverly :)

Cheers
