I need the : GTI split rim refurb DIY guide

Post by m@t_gti »

Hey,

Does anyone have a PDF of the GTI split rim refurb DIY Guide?? The thread has lost all it's pics & the link to the PDF doesn't work.

I fancy giving the refurb a go as I got a quote for £105 per wheel!!

its pretty easy tbh you will need a 8mm multispline torque bit with a good lever to undo the bolts,,

a lump hammer and a piece of wood to split the rims with no damage, put the wood on the backpad of the wheel then hit the wood with the hammer, it may take a few hits to free the center from the outer lips.

then get you polishing fingers out and be ready for some hard graft!

Don't like the sound of hard graft lol.

The wheels were refurbed a couple of days befor i bought the gti, but the lacquer on the lip came off within a couple of months - the centres seem ok.

So... i don't think I need to split the rims - i was gonna try & polish the lip without splitting them - Is this easy to do. Just Sand paper & polish needed??

I have no experience at all of doing any wheel refurbing polishing.

ahhhh what i would do then is still split the wheel as its 10x easier to do the whole lip and you wont damage the centers in the process! the strip the laquer off which some nitromors or paint stripper rub down with 600 wet and dry in some hot soapy water, then go to 800 wet and dry and finally finish on 1200 wet and dry ( the wetter the better as they say). once you have done this the wheel will be ready to polish! get yourself one of these beautys http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... -polishing all you do then is rub the polish on the polishing mop and keep polishing till you see a good shine starting to appear! once you have the shine go over the rim with the cleaning mop and bling bling hey presto

I have the PDF version on my laptop somewhere, I'll email you it when I find it.

Don't lacquer the rims after you've polished them - The same will happen again! Just make sure you seal them with some poorboys wheel sealant. Will do the trick. Also, use scotchbrite and some Autosol to polish them up with, works a treat.

I'm on the look out for some cheap temporary wheels on ebay, cos I need the car for work, then I can giv the refurb a go & just take my time with it.

Will keep u posted with how I get on!

Hey guys!

Just picked up some crusty wheels too, could someone pass on the pdf, or re-post the guide? My email is tomwilde67@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Tom.
