1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Hi guys. Having a new powerflow exhaust fitted within the next couple of days and was just wondering what setup to go for. Am deffinatly having a straight through, from turbo back but dunno what size pipe to go for. 2.5" or 3". I know its a diesel, so it aint gunna sound like no ferrari
, haha, but which would give the best sound, and more importantly, the best performance. Any opinions would be very grateful. Cheers
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
on tdis if u get an exhaust that has no baffles they usually sound better. i have a baffleless on mine with a de cat and it sounds nice
turbo all the way until u floor it n sounds like a monster
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
I'd say 2.5" would be sufficient. I'll be running a 2.5" turbo-back with single silencer at the rear to keep the drone down on the open road. Just doing de-cat makes our TDi's sound incredible, but wait 'til you do a full turbo-back!
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Awsum, really cant wait to get it fitted now. Ive had it remapped already, and was told that after i get a full straight through system fitted i would notice a big difference again. Can you feel a big difference on yours matey? Is there any filters in the downpipe or just before it? I think the setup ill be getting will be from the downpipe, straight through to the back. Just going to have a tip instead of a box at the back i think.
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
That filter you're metioning sounds like the CAT. I've decatted my setup, due to the fact we don't have to do MOT's like you guys. Unfortunately, diesels don't see gains like petrols do when it comes to turbo-back systems. You will probably see slightly better spool up, and possible a HP or two, but the gains are negligible.
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Yeah, its a partical filter on the diesel. Am sure that its just before the downpipe aint it. So removing this and the middle box, having just a straight though should make some difference surely. Should i just have a tip on the end, or do you need to have a back box?
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
a mate of mine has got a similiar setup your after from rochdale. hes gone for the tip on the end and it does sound really nice. its up to you at the end of the day the only difference is it ll be a bit louder with out the box. also you dont need a cat for the MOT as its a deisel, i passed mine with flying colours
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Ah ok cool - wasn't sure about the cat (correct term is particulate filter on the diesels as you mentioned) with regards to MOT's.
The particulate filter is actually just after the downpipe. It is placed between the downpipe and the start of the system, if that makes better sense.
Due to the not so standard nature of my Sooter, I'm not running a twin pipe tip, like the GTi's use, due to the rather smokey nature of my TDi.
Just a rally style turn down for me. But always remember, to each his own.

Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
I'm fairly sure it's actually a catalytic converter on the 1.9 TDI.
Only the later 16v 2.0 TDI engine (and only a select number of those ie. the 170bhp) has the DPF.

Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Thanks all for the info, however, i do have one more question. I remember reading somewhere on here that some people with the GTI's have had problems with sensors in the exhaust. Am i going to have this problem, or should i say do i have the same sensors as the gti's or not? Thanks
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
No, you won't have a problem as the our TDi's don't have a post sensor.
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Sounds good to me mate. Thanks for all your help. Just booked the car in at me local powerflow dealer today. Gone for the dual 3" tip, straight through from the downpipe. Hope she sounds nice when done. Dunno what the next step should be after this. I wanna try for as much power as possible really. What mods have you done with yours then matey?

Not a problem at all mate.NMavs wrote:Sounds good to me mate. Thanks for all your help. Just booked the car in at me local powerflow dealer today. * Decat
* DevilsOwn Stage 2+ Water/Methanol Injection
* Dimsport Remap
I'd like to get some power figures in the new year. The clutch is starting to battle holding the power. According to the same map running in a number of other vehicles I know of here (I didn't custom tune for the WMI), and considering when my car was bone stock, I got a 15HP and 22lbs/ft increase when running the WMI system... I'd say my Sooter is making somewhere in the region of 190HP and 370lbs/ft.
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
Nice. Was yours the PD130 or PD100 engine from standard? Was looking for a FMIC for mine, looked at forge but they only do one for the 1.8 GTI's, so am pritty unsure where else to look for one. Would like to get mine on the rollers in the new year to see what difference the exhaust and remap have had.
Re: 1.9 TDI Exhaust opinions!
forge do them jus gotta email em
