What to do with my old gti engine.....
As the title says really! Want your opinions on what to do with my Gti engine from my old GTI. The engine workes fine, just doesn't have a sump...
My thoughts are:
1)high compression cams, bore out , etc etc. and then transfer to my current gti.
I'm not too hot on engine tuning, but thought it could be a good summer project for me, seeing as its sitting in the garage doing sweet bugger all!
Anyone know anyone whos done something similar and the deatils and costs?

Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
I personally think your better off selling it and spending the money on your current GTI.
If you go down the route of cams & boring it out etc it will cost alot and the standard box wont last 5 mins if its running 155-165bhp.
Be absolutely quality if you did it but you would need to strengthen the gearbox or use a different box.
If you do all the work yourself then you would be able to keep the costs down considerably but I would expect the cams to cost between £500-600 alone.

schrick cams for the gti are about £700.
my GTI is ru nning around 150 -160bhp, and my gearbox is strating to go after about 5thousand miles.

Fair Play you got the cams fitted then.
What does it feel like with the extra 30BHP? and what's the idle like with the new cams? I pressume you fitted the cams and then had it remapped.
Shame about the gearbox but you probably expected that anyway

Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
in the end i didnt fit the schrick cams, as they were for the earlier gti engine. just ended up with my standard cams been reprofiled, then remapped.also had the head ported and polished.
Hopefully get it rr'd next couple of months, dependent on how long my gearbox lasts

ah right cool. Look forward to seeing the dyno results.
Does it feel much quicker then when accelerating? obviously its extra power without any weight gain so I assume it goes pretty well
I would love to get my cams done but the whole gearbox issue really does put me off. My car is still on the original box with 64,000 miles so it will go at some point anyway but I hope it wont be for sometime yet.

diesel gearbox would be the answer from what i understand as they are much stronger

Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
The diesel Gearbox has different gear ratio's in 3rd, 4th and 5th so It would completely change the performance of the car.kingsleysaywell wrote:diesel gearbox would be the answer from what i understand as they are much stronger
There has been a few people on here that have had the Diesel box ratios fitted by mistake and basically the car just doesnt pull like it should.
1st & 2nd are identical but when it gets into 3rd it dies.
I think the best solution is the later Lupo GTI 6 speed box but its going to be costly not matter what you do.
Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
how much would you be looking for it and what would be included? wiring etc?

Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
Well i'm only looking for 180, but it doesn't come with ancillaries such as the alternator or loom. It also doesnt have a sump. other than that its a perfectly working engine.
Re: What to do with my old gti engine.....
so it doesn't come with no driveshafts gearbox just the bare engine?
